Job Description:
Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads - both students and employers - for 50 years.
It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force.
TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 28,000 students in 2019-20.
Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions.
The college had 3,203 graduates in 2019-2020, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions.
Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 36% enrolled at TCC.
TCC's institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
The primary objective of the College Communications Dispatcher position is to provide the highest level of safety and security service for the college community.
This position is responsible for performing a variety of communications and operational task in support of public safety and security operations, connecting those in need of assistance to those who render assistance.
Duties may include emergency and non-emergency calls.
Operating various telecommunication equipment to dispatch Public Safety Officers, monitor radios and telephone calls.
Simultaneously attends to telephone and radio system while entering and extracting data.
The Lead is responsible for initial and updated training of dispatch personnel, contract and TCC.
Functional
Responsibilities:
Operate public safety communications equipment in accordance with existing guidelines Receive and transmit radio messages in accordance with FCC regulations and departmental guidelines Direct public safety officials and other emergency/non-emergency responders to meet a variety of emergency and non-emergency calls for service Process request for service by telephone, radio and community application alert system Receive request from the campus community, public, community members, and Law Enforcement, and other Emergency Responders and Emergency Management departments.
Initiate prompt, efficient and effective action to ensure all calls for service are handled in a professional manner Maintains computerized daily communications log Provides administrative support by collecting, organizing, entering, and retrieving a variety of data from computerized systems Monitors various campus security operations, surveillance cameras, and alarm systems.
Monitors campus call box, panic dialers and dispatches appropriate personnel Oversees dispatch operations, update and revise call taker/dispatch SOP, make recommendations to the Director of Public Safety regarding operations, report equipment malfunctions and recommend repairs of equipment.
Schedule Dispatch coverage, 24/7/365 Available for advice, and shift coverage for call off.
Minimum
Qualifications:
Experience as a dispatcher, preferably with a police department, college police or campus security.
Ability to receive and transmit information ensuring a timely and proper response to meet the needs of a caller.
Experience with the following software programs- Omnigo Dispatch, Kenwood Radio System, Everbridge, Informacast Emergency Notification Systems, and TCC Community Application Alert System Ability to keyboard.
Ability to multitask and pay attention to detail.
Ability to speak clearly and effectively control a conversation with a distressed caller.
Ability to obtain data via phone and radio Ability to read maps, reference books, technical manuals and related correspondence.
Ability to respond calmly to emergency and crisis situations Ability to apply professional judgement to determine the proper course of action and to maintain communication with other departments while decisions are being made for public safety purposes.
Experience with Cboard, card access control programming.
Ability to use a multi-line office phone, transfer and prioritize calls.
